Film: AK // Our Way by Dubsatch Collective
by Jacob Banfield When we innocently clicked a link on twitter at the beginning of January and saw this film, we knew it was something special. A group of skiers doing what they love to do and capturing that journey on film. We got in touch with Leo Ahrens, the director behind AK // Our Way, to talk about the inspiration behind the film, what it feels like to ski in Haines, Alaska and what the Dubsatch Collective are planning next...
When did you guys create the Dubsatch collective and why? Dubsatch Collective started about 3 years ago with the idea that we are a group of friends who collectively film each other to produce cool videos and go on fun trips. Where did the inspiration come from to film AK // Our way? Whose idea was it? Everything happened really fast and all of a sudden Colter Hinchliffe and I found ourselves sitting on the tarmac in Haines, AK. I knew we didn't have anyone to film us but I figured we should still try to produce something. The longer we were there the more it started to piece together into a worthy project. What was the best part of the trip? Well what made the whole trip awesome was that there was no pressure to do anything you didn't want to. When you are skiing some of the most dangerous mountains in the world you don't want to be nervous. It made for a relaxed mood that provided good times. How many people worked on AK // Our Way? everyone in the credits... How much planning goes into both choosing the terrain and the lines to ski as well as filming them? It fully depends on the face you are trying to ski. Some faces we went back too two or three times before we pulled the trigger. Safety is very important so that aspect has to be checked then rechecked before dropping. How long did it take to collect all the footage and edit it? Ha. Wayyyyyyy to long. Everyone that was part of this constantly wants to be on the road and explore new places. Sitting and editing a video took some serious focus. It's a really good thing we have a solid crew that is able to help each other out. What do you have planned for this season? This season we have several short films similar to this one dropping. As of right now we have some great footage from Utah, Interior BC and Japan is next on the list. There is something really refreshing about the way AK // Our Way is shot, was that intentional or did it just kind of happen? That's just kind of the way we see it I guess. We didn't say we are going to go try and make it different. We just did it and that's how it came out. What was the funniest thing that happened on the trip and the most challenging? Hmmm, hard question. There were definitely a lot of laughs. Time on the boat is always a blast. Funniest moment was probably the fireworks war on the boat. Most challenging was leaving when you know there are still lines you want to ski. Where do you guys see skiing going in the next few years? Who knows. I definitely have my hopes for where I would like to see it go but the only way that will happen is if we make it that way. *The John Mogul team in no way endorses firework wars, unless you are on a boat. |
