Behind the Scenes: Relentless Freeze Festival 2012
by Jacob Banfield & Daniel Clark Over the past 4 years Freeze Festival has established itself as the premier pre-season snowsports event in London. With a capacity of 17,500, an incredible line-up of live artists and a snowboarding world cup event status... It is only fitting that we give the organisers an opportunity to shed some light on what it takes to put on an event of this scale.
So Freeze is now in its 4th year, who originally founded the festival? Andrew Topman, Events Director at Sportsvision along with his team created the festival in 2008. Now 11 people run the event annually and SportsVision employ a team of 20+ during the live event. What part of Freeze do you think will be the biggest hit with the fans and is there anything new happening this year? The line up is probably the best we have ever had at Freeze, there is something for everyone. The skiing and snowboarding is invite only so we have been able to invite whoever we want and gone for the best. The O’Neill cinema is premiering only the best exclusive snow movies, the Metro Lodge winter party will be insane and the Desperados factory and skate mini ramp again will be a highlight. What is the best part of working on an event of this scale? Without a doubt, its all about how you work together as a team and the reward of people saying how good the event was. In my role, I aim to get the event sold out and leave people wanting more next year. Nothing is more rewarding. How long is the build up and breakdown, is there anything interesting about throwing an event in Battersea Power Station? The build and break is 3 weeks and Battersea, being such an illustrious site has its issues with sound limits and how delicately we leave the site after- any concrete, fence damage etc. Do you guys go on a team ski trip? Do you get to take a (well deserved) holiday after the event? We all take our days in lieu well after the event has finished as there is still so much left to be done to ensure a great post event. It will not be until December when we can begin to cool off. How much thought goes into the look and feel of the event? The look and feel of the event is something we care about very much, we want to be easily identified as the biggest après ski party on the planet. As THE ski/snowboard and music festival. What goes on behind the scenes, that people wouldn't expect? We all have no sleep and get up ridiculously early and bed really late to ensure everyone has the greatest time - day or night. Relentless Freeze Festival takes place on 26 & 27 October 2012. (http://www.relentlessfreeze.com/) |
